Earning mileage: Infants (who don't pay for a full ticket) are not eligible to earn miles.

Luggage: Some people report that their friend or parent flew and got lucky. However, it's best to check with the Airline (on their website or calling them), BEFORE packing your suitcases. Here are some helpful links, plus a summary of baggage allowed for lap infants.
Child paying 10% of fare can check a small suitecase up to 10kg/20lb. Child paying 50%+ of adult fare can check standard baggage allowance (one full size suitcase 23kg/50lb) both are +stroller and car seat. One carry on + booster or infant seat + pump and cooler
1 chacked bag at same rate as adults first bag + 1 stroller + 1 car seat. 1 carry-on diaper bag per child is allowed + pump + milk cooler + (stroller??)
1 stroller + 1 carseat. carry on: diaper bag, pump, carry one size stroller, carseat
1 checked bag up to 50lb/23kg. 1 stroller 1 carseat. 1 carry on up to 13lb/6kg or a carry on size stroller
  • BA
1 checked bag 50lbs/23kg + two of the following: stroller,car/booster seat,travel cot,babyack carrier. 1 extra carryon bag.
  • ElAL
1 checked bag 50lb/23kg. 1 stroller or car seat. NO carry on. (its not like their makpid these days any way  :))
[/list]

Proof: Some airlines require proof of age. Rather bring along some kind of proof, and not get stuck because of an gate agent or TSA guard that had a bad day.

Infants are cute.

You can go today to the airport ticket counter and get an infant ticket issued based on current prices.

ETA: You should consider if it is worth the trip. Every $100 increase in fares will be $10 more for infant ticket. How much will a special trip to the airport cost you in time and money?
I will not be going to the airport today but thx for that info I will be going in 3 weeks & this Turkish flight is for a month after that so I'll be able to work everything out then

A car seat often recommended when travel includes flying is the Diono Radian.  The sides are low enough so that you can use the tray table.  I considered this when my kid was 8 months old, but ultimately bought one of the Britax ClickTight.  A couple years later, I now wish I had gone with the Radian every time we're on a plane.

It folds and can be used into the booster years, but is not small (it is narrow, but tall) or lightweight.  Might not be what you're looking for, but I figured I'd mention it.

I booked a 1.5yo in UA "P" class lax - EWR route. I'm planning on bringing a car seat on for baby. When booking I didn't think it would be an issue. Will it?

If the baby has a seat it should not be a problem at all.

To be on the safe side, bring some sort of paper showing that's its travel approved just in case a FA decides to be an idiot. (Talking from experience.)

If I added an infant to domestic ticket and might not take her, do I need to remove her from the ticket?

Yup, or if you wait until the airport to check in do it there.

No, you can wait until the gate, but you can't get past security without a ticket for the baby IME.

I imagine you would need to do it before you go through security.  But you may be better off doing it sooner, depending on how many people are flying with the infant and your cabin's seat configuration.  You don't want to run the risk of playing airplane musical chairs if there is another infant too close by; there's usually only one extra oxygen mask for each row on each side of the aisle, so maximum of one lap infant.

Don't wait. You don't gain, and, as just happened to my wife, you'll need a boarding pass, and if they're pulling people off you'll be first if you don't have a boarding pass
