Is Fi the best option if I'm just looking for a cheap plan and phone for my son? He will mostly be using it in the house where there's wifi

I knew this was going to happen!!

Meet our new Unlimited plan
Get unlimited data, talk and text for $45/line for 4 lines, plus free
international calls from the US to 50+ destinations, and 100 GB of
storage from Google One.

And just like on your current plan, when you travel, your plan does too,
with unlimited data and texting abroad at no extra charge. There also are
no contracts or cancellation fees, so join or cancel anytime.

If the Fi Unlimited plan isn't for you, don't worry - your current Flexible
plan isn't going anywhere. If your data needs change, you can switch
between plans anytime

Still to expensive, it will be great a middle plan in the 25$/30 for 4/5gb

Or at least they should give 1gb in the $20 ..

Google doesn't seem to be prorating properly. For example if my service renews autmatically on jan 1st at 12am, and I pause it again at 6am the same day, I'm charged $3.21. It should be more like $1 for 2 lines. Anyone else have this issue? They don't appear to be prorating certain portions of the bill.

I paused my Fi service and since then I can't call out from hangouts.
any way around it? it usually called Via FI.
Before I had Fi it worked fine.
other accounts - without Fi work as well.

I have the same thing. Not sure there's a way around it. When you signed up for fi, your gvoice/hangouts number was "ported" to fi so it makes sense that it wouldn't work anymore when service is paused.

can I insert a Sprint sim while service is paused? I'm told that since sprint is CDMA it needs to be linked to device MEID, which even with FI service paused, its still by FI.

Can anyone comment on the quality of Google Fi network as well as customer service? I have been with Sprint for years but I use a mere fraction of my plans allowance but they don't offer a plan that meets my needs. We're mostly on wifi so my wife and I use some 2-3 GB SHARED on a monthly basis. Many times it is less than 2 GB. So I'm thinking maybe Google Fi would be a good plan for me? Thoughts?? Thanks!

I personally like it mostly (other than some spotty service in Monsey). If you are not an avid traveler there may be cheaper options though...

Thanks. We are not big travelers. What cheaper options are there? Need max 5-6 GB shared.

Perhaps my personal pros & cons will help:

Pros:
  • Fi is an MVNO so you get the benefit of piggybacking on some of the largest US networks
  • Works in almost every country (I've personally used it in over 30 countries), albeit at a higher cost per minute than some competitors
  • Better spam call control (I think)
  • Easy to pause service
  • Plays well with google hangouts - which means I can make & receive calls from my desktop while traveling to save money

Cons:
  • You can run up quite a bill while traveling
  • No easy way to forward to an international SIM (I finally splurged on a new dual-sim phone just so I can have a local number here in Ukraine while still having my Fi number on the same phone
  • Does not work with all phones
  • Did not play well with google voice - but they are slowly changing that

They are also offering some Covid-19 support by removing some data throttling and extending grace periods.

I'm based in the NYC area. (Brooklyn)

I've been with Google Fi since the end of 2018. I'm extremely unsatisfied with the call quality. Many times my phone will not ring at all, and will not even show an incoming or missed call.

I can see there is an incoming call as I'm sitting by my desk and the call rings on hangouts, but doesn't ring on my phone. Sometimes my phone will ring after a good few rings on hangouts, and many many times, the call will not come thru at all! If the caller leaves a VM I'll get the VM after a few minutes.

Also, I am parking in a underground parking lot at night. I was using Verizon wireless before switching to Fi. I would drive in to the lot while on the phone, and the call would as usual. With Fi the calls are being dropped while I'm still on the ramp in to the lot...

Many times when I call out I'll have to dial 3 times before it goes through.

And I keep on hearing from people they tried calling me, yet I have no missed calls. Many callers don't leave a VM, so I won't even know they called!

Anyone else having this issue?

I submitted a claim a few week ago and this is what they responded...

"Thank you for contacting Google Fi Support!

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused. I see that you are unable to make/receive the calls. I've checked your account details and it looks like your account status is fine and active with all the networks in sync.

However, I am glad to inform you that our engineering team has successfully investigated and resolved the ongoing issue! You should be able to use your services now without any interruption.

We appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter.

Hope this information helps!

If the issue still persists or you have any queries, please feel free to write back. You can always contact us via chat. We are available 24/7 and more than happy to help you.

Google Fi wishes you and your family, good health. Stay Safe!"

What a lame response! needless to say no change what so ever happened.

I'm wondering if other users in NYC are experiencing those issues as well.

Update on above:

I finally toke my time and chatted with Google Fi about the service issues. The rep had me dial a specific code to check who my coverage is with, came up as sprint. then had me enter a special code to switch it to T-Mobile. Works like a charm now.

Finally haggled with him about a credit for more then a year of bad coverage. Initially he said his supervisor denied the request, then after more complaints and mentioning my intent to file a claim with the NYS AG he came back saying they will issue a service credit and I should contact them after the current bill is generated.
