Getting the Free Phone:

If someone on DDF goes through the process now, please report on what parts of this Wiki are still accurate. Thanks!

Everything Below this line is outdated info!
As of a Jan 2016, At&t has changed the way that you get the phone.

The online system is broken for now, so you need to go to a At&T store, buy a phone outright with the card, and send them a picture of the receipt.
You will still need to sign up for the $45 prepaid plan, but no credit check is required.

They do not even ask to see your SS#

This should be much better if you want to use the phone on another network or sell it (or possibly just return it).

The report I got said that there is no requirement to have 15 days of service, but I wouldn't rely on the rep that said that until I confirm it is true.

If you plan on using the phone, before turning on the phone for the 1st time, request that AT&T unlock the phone at  www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (for Customer Type select 'Non-AT&T Mobility customer'). If you activate the phone before requesting the unlock, your account will have to stay active for 60 days before AT&T will unlock the phone (there are reports of the phones being unlocked after closing the account, regardless of service time)

The old way it used to work, (and how it probably works now as well).

If you are on AT&T Postpaid plan:
  • You'll be able to login to your At&t Account with the link Citi sends you, and purchase any No-contract phone. Pay with this card.
  • Activate it on your plan, and use it on At&t for at least 15 days.
  • Citi will reimburse you 1-2 statements later for for up to $650 of the phone cost, you pay all taxes.

If you are not a AT&T customer:
  • You will need to pay for the 1st month service (min ~$50)
  • You will get a 2nd Hard Pull from AT&T to open a postpaid account.
  • Plenti: Before opening the Att line, make a account with plenti, and link to your AT&T account here. You should get 2,500 plenti points for opening a new Att Line (current deal until 11/26/2015), plus 400 points for using paperless billing, which you can redeem for $29 (I think this is how it works, someone who has dome this please confirm and delete this comment)

Yup this card rocked for me. Also, Plenti is a simple google search guys. Get an account and attach it to your att account. The attach link is on the my att page in the upper left hand side. Please do not make me do arrows and circles!!!

Finally, you only need to hold the phone on an ATT plan for 15 or 20 days. After that close the ATT account and ask for the phone to be unlocked. It will unlock automatically, once the account is closed down. They will send you an unlock code, but it turned out I did not need it.

Poor research took it's toll on me. They convinced me at AT&T that to get the unlock code on my fully paid Iphone, that I must be a customer with them for 60 days, and if I cancelled before, it would remain an AT&T locked phone. So I kept it for another month, and paid an extra $50.

Do you think it's worth closing this card quickly, to be able to do it again in 18 months?

For me the card worked out pretty well, credit posted together with the 2nd statement, easy transfer to my checking.

Overall, $150 (AF+tax on phone) for a $625 phone was worth it to me.

(I already use Att as my carrier, so for me it was quite simple).

Data point: I'm on a business plan, and the link only takes you to the consumer side. So I was forced to buy a consumer plan with the phone.

When the phone arrived, I took out the consumer sim and put in my business one. Called to cancel the consumer plan, took 1 minute.

The time on the business plan counts for the 15 days, but you need to manually register your IMEI with Att.
This requires you have a contract with AT&T and the iphone is the AT&T version?

I'm not sure if I understand your question exactly.

I am on a postpaid At&t plan regardless of this card.

You need to buy the phone from the Att.com website at full cost.

Meaning that the phone is the At&t version, still locked to At&t's network.

You will in full for the phone, and once you complete $2000 spend, you will get credit back on 2nd statement.

Don't forget the big "BUT". you will not get the money back, unless you activate the phone on At&t first, then use it on At&t POSTPAID service for 15 days.

The cheapest postpaid plan is around $50 a month, then you can cancel.

That is not an issue if you are already on At&t, but for T-Mobile etc. users it's an added cost and hassle. It is also a hard pull on your credit report.

There is a difference between a "no-contract" phone an an "unlocked" phone.

This deal gives you a no contract phone. But it is still locked to At&t even though you own it. They will not unlock it unless you use it on Att for a while.

(You can try eBay unlock codes, but those are hit-n-miss...)

So heads up on this - this is true! You need to have the phone on an AT&T plan for 15 days. The cheapest plan is 50 or so bucks, as stated. BUT if you add in Plenti card - you get back MULLA!!! For creating a AT&T account, for paperless statement, and payments. Finally, once you are done with the 15 days - CLOSE THE AT&T Account - ASAP!

That was my BIG mistake and this is THE REAL secret. It is 100% true that you need to wait 60 days to get an unlock code for a phone you buy from AT&T "unlocked" - do u not love the irony!

Anyway, by closing it - they are FORCED to give you the unlock code! But again, u had to have it open for 15 days to get the free phone rebate. Also, they are VERY slow to get you these kinds of unlock codes. Do not get angry, like I did countless times at the useless at&t support folks - they are not the fault - AT&T loves your money!

So 15 days with a contract - but not a 2 year contract account. Then close it. The ask for unlock code at https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/

Then - wait...wait...wait and then hope it all works out like it did for me.

Too bad I didn't know about that when I had the card, would have closed it, instead of paying for 2 months.

Yup, I was soooo pissed about this card. So I kept complaining and my DW figured out the Plenti trick. Combined we came out even cost wise on that. But if we had done just the 15 days - we would have been far ahead.

Would you be able to post (or link) a small writeup here on the "plenti trick"?

I'm sure ppl will find it useful, also GIYF is not working for me on this...

Thanks

That makes sense - essentially the same idea, if you have no account they cannot hold the knife to your throat, but they will shleep, so may not be the best idea. I would do the 15 days (which u need to do ANYWAY to get the bonus), and then cancel

Another ft comment mentioned that they unlocked first, then activated the att service, but used it right away with Verizon, and they got credited back anyway because they paid for Att service for 15 days (and the phone IMEI is registered with that Att account.)

That got me thinking.. If you never use it on att's network, you can activate, don't cancel for 15 days of service (while using the phone on T-Mobile etc.). then when Att bills you for the first month, call in and cancel the account. They will probably waive the fees as their system will show that you never used the service.

I know IME I forgot to cancel the sim that came with my phone (see my post above), I got a $50 bill in the mail. Called in and the rep easily waived the charge as I never used that plan.

+1. I was not an AT&T customer when I ordered the phone. As soon as it arrived I requested the unlock before turning on the phone. It was unlocked in <5 minutes.

As for Plenti, the terms of the current 2,500 pt offer for a new wireless line say you need to keep your account open for 30 days. Closing after 15 would prevent you from receiving points...or has someone experienced otherwise?
