Getting the Free Phone:

If someone on DDF goes through the process now, please report on what parts of this Wiki are still accurate. Thanks!

Everything Below this line is outdated info!
As of a Jan 2016, At&t has changed the way that you get the phone.

The online system is broken for now, so you need to go to a At&T store, buy a phone outright with the card, and send them a picture of the receipt.
You will still need to sign up for the $45 prepaid plan, but no credit check is required.

They do not even ask to see your SS#

This should be much better if you want to use the phone on another network or sell it (or possibly just return it).

The report I got said that there is no requirement to have 15 days of service, but I wouldn't rely on the rep that said that until I confirm it is true.

If you plan on using the phone, before turning on the phone for the 1st time, request that AT&T unlock the phone at  www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (for Customer Type select 'Non-AT&T Mobility customer'). If you activate the phone before requesting the unlock, your account will have to stay active for 60 days before AT&T will unlock the phone (there are reports of the phones being unlocked after closing the account, regardless of service time)

The old way it used to work, (and how it probably works now as well).

If you are on AT&T Postpaid plan:
  • You'll be able to login to your At&t Account with the link Citi sends you, and purchase any No-contract phone. Pay with this card.
  • Activate it on your plan, and use it on At&t for at least 15 days.
  • Citi will reimburse you 1-2 statements later for for up to $650 of the phone cost, you pay all taxes.

If you are not a AT&T customer:
  • You will need to pay for the 1st month service (min ~$50)
  • You will get a 2nd Hard Pull from AT&T to open a postpaid account.
  • Plenti: Before opening the Att line, make a account with plenti, and link to your AT&T account here. You should get 2,500 plenti points for opening a new Att Line (current deal until 11/26/2015), plus 400 points for using paperless billing, which you can redeem for $29 (I think this is how it works, someone who has dome this please confirm and delete this comment)

AT&T Business customers see here.[/list]

IDK, but you can set your Cash Advance Limit with Citi to Less then the gift card cost before purchasing to be sure.

Can anybody come up with more definition as to how the 3x TYP work for online goods? For example, can I buy VGC from a site like giftcardmall.com and get 3x points?

I did not see MS covered in the Wiki. Just up the thread there is a report of a Simon mall GC purchase coding as a purchase, but that's not an online purchase, so doubt that it would generate TY points.

I don't know of a way to MS with this...maybe the only way is to buy GCs and resell them?

A Citi rep just told me that the CA limits are tied to CL limits and you can't lower one without lowering the other...

***** I just tried to purchase a phone, using the Citi provided link. I was on the AT&T site and selected a phone, but it would not allow me to check out without also choosing a rate plan *****  - so I think the guidance provided up the thread will not work in this case....

Thanks

When you search for phones, was the search limited to full price phones only?

It's an option down on the left side, "no annual contract"

yes and the no annual contract term is prominently displayed - but there is nothing on the page that allows one to click through and pay without first selecting a rate plan . I've tried several times. I am using the link that appears in my Citi More Access account online.

Do you mean pay for new service?

Or a payment plan on the device?

A rate plan to be used for service, in conjunction with the device - in other words, after you choose a phone, it then directs you to chose a qualifying rate plan you want to be on.

If you don't choose a plan, there does not seem to be any way to purchase the phone via online checkout (you know, the usual way of buying things online)

Very strange. You don't have the bottom 2 options of the picture after adding to cart?

No, not at all. Can I ask where your link came from? directly from the internet?

My link is coming from within my CC account online. The directions state that in order to qualify for the bonus, we need to use that specific link or one provided by email (don't have that one yet) - but can't imagine it would be different. Did the one you posted come to you by email from Citi?

I decided to chat with the AT&T staff - they told me that even though the link requires me to select a rate plan, that once I do, I can cancel that plan after 14 days. I went ahead and cut and saved that conversation.

Your info is correct. You must sign up for a new plan, however, you can cancel after 14 days.

Yes, my link came up from my CC account as well.

I opened a new plan, had 0 usage for 15 days, closed the plan and they kindly refunded me the entire bill.

Curious that they changed the link...oh well, looks like the end result is the same.

Thank you all much!
