booked a flight EWR-ANC United in August for the family. There are absolutely no "regular" economy seats available. Should I bit the bullet and pay miles or dollars for "preferred" seats or hope something opens up till then?

When there are few seats available, lately I've waited for them to assign me a seat at checkin.
The possibilities are: a) They'll give you a better seat free because that's all that's left.  b) You'll all get middle seats because that's all that's left.  c) You'll be the ones bumped because all the seats have been assigned.
I've has (a) once and (b) once.
They put everyone on the reservation nearish each other.

Just call or DM them, they will assign you those seats for free.

An Air Canada PHL-YUL-Calgary flight I booked with United for today had the first leg canceled. I did not receive any notification of the cancellation. My 15-year-old SIL found out when she got to the airport this morning and found the AC desks empty.

No ability to rebook on the app. Tracking Google Flights, I could see other options to get her to Calgary today. All I saw on the app though was that another flight for the next day was processing in my account, but still hasn't been confirmed. This was for a later (and cheaper) flight even though the same earlier flight she was scheduled for today was still available. I spent my day on hold with United and Air Canada trying to either switch to an earlier flight or at the very least confirm the later one for tomorrow.

I must have missed the first united rep after 1:30 mins of waiting, as I found the call disconnected after switching to another call for a minute. On the second attempt (no wait time quoted and no call back option) it took another 2 hrs to reach someone in India whose English was so poor she could barely understand me. I've never had a rep for a US based company with such poor command of the language, but no chance I would risk HUCA.

By this time, all other reasonable (under 12 hrs) flight options from PHL or EWR had sold out. She kept insisting that the flight I see on the app won't confirm and I should allow her to book her on an AA flight for Friday, which I obviously refused and implored her to just leave the non-confirmed flight alone. By this point, I was able to see the reservation come up on AC's website. She then said she would transfer our call to AC to see if they can confirm and wait on the line till it's sorted out. It's been well over 2 hours now waiting for someone to answer at AC.

The point of my rant is this: How much longer can these legacy carriers charge a premium with the claim that they offer better service than low cost carriers when their phone wait times are much longer than Spirit/Frontier and the quality of service once connected is just about on level with service found in third world countries? The benefit of rescheduling on another airline isn't worth anything if (I'm not actually at the airport and) it involves spending all day on the phone while the other options gradually disappear.

Your frustration at the lack of customer service is understandable!!
I wish you well on your quest for a decent flight.
How does an airline not inform the ticketed passengers of a cancellation?!

yes.
I'm careful about that.  With most orders, but airlines especially.

Had an experience with Frontier flight got delayed and delayed, then was canceled without notifying anyone.
However was able to rebook through an email link they sent, buried in a pile of delay email and their email support was fast and responsive regarding claims.

Sounds like you may be right and we should stop complaining about low cost airlines.

A flight NYC - FLL on Spirit. (I know.)
Flight delayed from 1 pm to 4 pm. Notified in mid-morning by email.
Then an email at 11:00 says flight is now 1pm.
Drop everything. no lunch, no packing food. no prolonged good-bys.
Uber to airport to find that Spirit meant their flight was cancelled and they were rebooked on the next day's 1pm flight!  the email DIDN'T give that information.
Only some of the passengers came running. (Presumably the rest couldn't make it on time.) Spirit rebooked them on a different late afternoon flight.
Frustrating!

United blamed Air Canada, while Air Canada claimed that no contact info whatsoever came through from United and blamed them. This is despite the fact that I added the passenger's email address to the booking.

This may have happened because although I booked this flight through my United account, a few days later I later called to switch the first flight to one departing from PHL instead of EWR (I couldn't switch through the website/app because the YUL-YYC leg was no longer available, so I needed them to manually change just the first leg, and you can imagine how long it took me to explain to this English-challenged rep what I wanted). But there's still no excuse for them to not attach the contact info, which goes back to United's lousy and unknowledgeable phone reps.

Another blame game with this flight was that I was unable to request KSML online (was business class ticket) because on the United page it said I need to order any services through AC, and AC's website said that since it was booked 3rd party, any requests need to be made through them.

BTW, Air Canada rep answered phone after 4 hours of waiting, but at least he seemed to have been Canada-based and knowledgeable.

Sorry for the cross-post; any insight? I plan on trying the Singapore office again tonight, but the hold times are brutal!

Now on to my question. I have searched on point.me and confirmed that space is available JFK-TLV on Virgin Atlantic for the dates I am looking for. I transferred 102,000 AMEX to ANA but then realized that I needed 104,000. By then, it had already posted, so I called them up (Singapore number on hold for about 60 minutes), and the rep told me nothing was available; I told her that I saw availability, and she put me on a few minutes hold and came back confirming availability. I asked if she could hold it for me, and she said no. I transferred over another 2000 points. I called back last night and today (US number 2 hr+ hold each time), and they claim nothing is available. I just double-checked point.me and on Air France, and both are availability. What are my options? Any tricks to get them to "find" it? I did notice that it seemed like they were first searching non-stop, and I had to tell them to search with a stopover specifically.

I recently had (I think on AA) that they gave me a seat in premium economy, another time, they gave me a middle seat in premium economy and there was a couple that had the window and aisle so they switched the aisle with me. After takeoff, I switched across the aisle which had the whole row empty anyway...

I read an article comparing the three a few months ago (don't remember where), and the writer concludes Allegiant is worth it and the rest usually aren't.

When purchasing Frontier tickets in an airport, do I need everyone's ID or is name and DOB good?
