You should be able to do online check-in for the second flight before you leave, no?

You would not be protected for any delays since separate tickets.
Since both are AF you can get both Boarding passes in JFK, you can even check through bags, if you show the check in agent your second ticket.

I have personally done it more than once.
I even checked bag through partner airlines that have interline agreements. Meaning not even under the same Alliance.
Just show the agent both confirmation numbers.

What happened to United upsells like economy to premium economy when the passenger cancels the flight? Do you get the money back as a voucher?

possible? Yes. Easy? No.  Be there extra extra early as it will take you much longer to get through security.
Always use an Amex, you'll thank me one day.

My brother was flying united on a full flight no status. the upgraded him to economy plus. Any idea why?
not considered an upgrade really they ran out of seats befor he was assigned or a family was traveling and needed his seat

And how about if i book with Priceline?

Don’t book with AA. Use Priceline or other OTA.
