ETA: why is it called a vort anyways?
The chosson is supposed to say a vort i.e a shtickle torah
Vort is Yiddish for Word. In many communities, rather than signing the Tenai'im (legally binding contract, that the man will marry the women and the women will marry the man + expenses etc) so far in advance of the wedding, it can be pretty bad violating that contract if plans were to change, so instead it's a verbal promise "word" that they will marry each other.
Vort (word) - as in "you have my word"
