I sent them your secure message, and was told I'd get the 25k, then I got a letter saying I need to choose between the 25k and the 20k + $50.

Did you get a similar letter?

And i got this response when i did it for my husband:

I don't think you can credit to United yet, but you can credit to CO and transfer to United. As far as crediting to a different name, it's probably a huge YMMV. They'll probably open a new account for you. If you're a churner there's a slight chance they'll find your account and disqualify you since you've already received a bonus for this card.

Nope, I just have the 30K+$50.  Of course I'd appreciate if you do that and then ask Chase for the other 20K (or 25K) via secure message, but you don't have to do the extra work if you don't want to.

i know lol sorry i applied for both got instant approval for the united and the chase said will receive written word within 30days

What I was going to tell you (before I got the "new reply" message and changed my reply) was that you can get a refund on the annual fee for any card if you close it within 60 days and that the Sapphire Preferred has no fee the first year, but you'll need to spend $3K.
