He deliberately annoyed people and refused to admit that he was kidding. The wrestling fans from the south did not think he was joking when he taunted them. I am not disputing that this may be an art form, but what I am saying is that it wasn't just that his peers didn't "get" him. Part of his modus operandi was to make people angry.
Part of some people's modus operandi is to get mad. And ironically part of the idea is they also have to be annoyed at the people who "got them mad". Even though they wanted to be gotten mad.
On the other hand, the people on the other side are only happy if the people they "got mad" are actually annoyed at them. So they need it too.
The administrators sometimes need to ban the ones who "get the others mad" because that is also part of the game.
We each have a role in the big game. It doesn't really matter which you are, as long as you do your job.
