Verizon Smartphone without data

I searched the forums and didn't come up with anything although I'm sure this must have been discussed before so I apologize beforehand.

Bought a used Motorola Droid for a family member who has Verizon but no data plan. He does NOT want a data plan, simply wants a smartphone because it has a good camera and potentially to use wifi. I did some google searches (after buying the phone of course) and everyone says it can't be done on Verizon because there is no SIM card used.

However, I remember something about activating a data plan for a month and then cancelling it, which could be done because the phone wasn't bought as free upgrade. This way Verizon activates the phone and doesn't deactivate when you ditch the data. Is this possible? If yes, what is the way to do it? Is there another method to be able to use smartphone on Verizon without data plan?

I don't know how that would work, But I do know that its officially impossible to activate a smartphone on Verizon without a data plan (with the exception of a few smartphones manufactured around 2009 that don't classify as smartphones). Verizon automatically knows by the ESN number that it is a smartphone. The only work around would be to clone another phones ESN number which is illegal and could cause a host of other compatibility issues.

why dont you try getting a "pay-per-kb" plan and block the internet so you dont pay for it

AFAIK you cant get that plan with a smartphone, only a basic one can get it.
