Another music trivia question. Which Hillel Palay song was specifically put at the end of an album because the singer wanted to draw attention away from the song because he was afraid the lyrics would reflect poorly on him?
Here's the answer:
In 2015, Yosef Chaim Shwekey released his second album, Hakol Letova. The final song on the album was a stunning Hillel Palay song entitled Kedusha. Lyrics are from a big mekubal from a previous generation, and they go as follows (
via jyrics):
קדושה אני מבקש
,קדושה אני מבקש
קודש קדשים
אני מבקש
תנו לי קדושת
,ארץ ישראל
תנו לי קדושת
אהבת ישראל
(I can't find the original on JewishMusic.fm, but I found it as
a single with Dudi Kalish. I'm not sure if this was released before or after Shwekey's version.)
Yosef Chaim Shwekey said that he deliberately placed the song as the last track on his album because he was afraid that people would hear the words and brand him as a tzioni. Thus, he kept the song out of a prominent spot with the hopes that fans would find it while kana'im would not. (Not his words exactly, I'm rewriting from memory, though I can find the recording if necessary - it's from a Z-Report Live with Yossi Zweig.)
Interestingly, after the song was released, Israeli artist Avi Miller released
an album collecting Palay's songs. (The date on the website indicates this album was put out in 2014, before Shwekey's album, but IIRC the date is incorrect.) On that album, he sings this song, but he changes the words. Miller uses the words Ko Ribon for the tune, which happens to be a beautiful adaptation of the lyrics.
