Problem is that he took a perfect song and turned it on its head...

But i guess people who haven't experienced the original won't know what they missed

It's genius, IMHO.
The song was written by a tremendous talmid chacham, and it's strong harsh words was the mussar style of Europe.
R' SYR rebuttal is the way IMHO the mussar style that's (should be) for America, upbeat and positive.
I love it!

The way I view the song (I don't know if that's the intention), is a direct message at mashgichim still giving Lithuanian style mussar shmoozen.

The song was written to be a sad song of deep despair. IMHO it had very little to with mussar. It is a beautiful expression of the anguish that the composer felt for whatever reason..
This song was never intended to represent mussar and this is also most definitely not slabodka style mussar! (Of which Re"k was a talmid)

I don't disagree with shlomo yehudas upbeat message, in fact mussar was always supposed to be somewhat upbeat and positive (slabodka). Just this song was not about that.

I know him personally.
I hear he has now "shelves" full of songs.
He's also gonna have a song on Shmueli Ungar's upcoming album as reported by our "insider".

Totally disagree. When I was a kid I also thought it was a song of depression, when I revisited the song recently (when Abish put it out recently) I realized it was hardcore Mussar.

Does a depressing song serve any purpose in Jewish culture?
I would think not.

Totally disagree. When I was a kid I also thought it was a song of depression, when I revisited the song recently (when Abish put it out recently) I realized it was hardcore Mussar.
Ok, whats the mussar message. - Lets analyze this, here are the lyrics:

Here the composer laments his deeply depressing thoughts, and that he is wearied by the "war of the flesh"
This part has no positive message. Just despair.

This verse is undeniably negative - about a life that has no value and nothing to contribute or to gain. - No mussar school approves of this message. None.

This is simply further expressing the how unbearable the depression is. - Where life only has value if one can forget the above thoughts of self pity and lack of self worth..

Finally a prayer to hashem, to please help him deal with his sad thoughts of helplessness and usefulness. To give his life meaning.

Dont get me wrong. I love this song! This song is an amazing portrayal and expression of deep emotions. But it is not a "mussar" song at all.
