This verse is undeniably negative - about a life that has no value and nothing to contribute or to gain. - No mussar school approves of this message. None.

I don't have the time (right now) to harava over a song with you, and type analysis, but lets' take the above stanza

You wrote that it means that life has no meaning. I believe he means his life has no meaning, (and he's beating himself up about it), that he's not taking from this world (the wonderful opportunities that life can give) and he's not giving to the world anything. And he's beating himself up that what he's doing on this world is no better than being dead. Hardcore mussar. Very hard core.

I've read mussar shmuzen that were similar.

Fine. He's definitely beating himself up about it. and I agree that one can take out of the song mussar. Though I maintain that the whole portrayal of the song as a song of "chizuk" is inaccurate. - It was written out of deep yiush and tefilah.
BTW See here where R'k son is quoted saying this also. A"yen shom. http://onegshabbat.blogspot.com/2011/02/blog-post.html

I never said it was chizuk.
It's hard strong mussar.
R' SYR is responding to the harsh mussar with an uplifting rebuttal.

btw, the first stanza is clearly mussar, it's about the battle between the nefesh against the basar and dam.

Not sure how you are defining mussar..

Yes, about the war. He says that he is wearied by it...

I just checked out the video you posted, and in the intro they portray the song as a mussar song.
I have an acharon like me - R' SYR!  ;D

anyways why rip the first original deep lyrics that were put out since abie rottenberg's prime?

Where can we hear an original un-rebutted version?

We do find this concept in Davening. "Adam Yesodo Mei'afar Ve'sofo Le'afar, Be'nafshi Yavi Lachmo, Mashal..." and "Mu Uni..." , but I think that the main focus of there stanzas is to portray the greatness of Hashem versus the lowliness of humans, and that we don't have the ability to sustain ourselves and we plead that Hashem help us.          Regarding the Musser aspect, I think (I didn't hear this from Daas Torah, just my own thought) that this is still befitting Musser for conceited people. For people who think they run the world, who think themselves immortal. The absolute abiss could serve as a reality check, to hopefully bring the high flying egos back into the realm of our world. It will hardly cause them to become depressed, but most probably rub off just a drop. But the same result would surely not materialize from their hearing the silky smooth and positive-evoking songs that the rest of us thrive from.

I interrupt this mussar schmooze to bring you the first in a daily series (which may never have another entry), and present a Song of the Day. This is a blatant and shameless rip off of a now-defunct, formerly favorite website of mine.

Hinei Kail
Shlomo Simcha and the Nafsheinu Orchestra
Fusion
https://youtu.be/63D2V86p7OQ

I know what just happened: as soon as that bass guitar hit you at the start of the song, you tried helplessly to resist it, but your feet they started a'twitchin and your neck it started bobbin' that noggin of yours.

Buy the whole album here: http://mostlymusic.com/products/fusion

The fantastic funky, jazzy arrangements of some not-so-popular Carlebach tunes with Simcha's vocals makes for a terrific album, even though it is technically a wedding band album and should therefore suck.

Enjoy!

Being a big fan of Shlomo Simcha I'll have to check it out!

Also, I like this idea, please try to keep it up

Shira shel Yom was always a lot of fun. I miss it!

Talent wise shlomo simcha is as good as anyone if not better.  What I always find is that I don't care for his song selection and he needs better composers.
Singing Carlebach does take care of that problem.  My only disappointment was that he didn't sing all of the words of havdala.
If you have never heard his nusach for Shabbos it is also worth hearing.
Btw the album is on spotify.

Anyone hear the new (Reb) Shloime Taussig? I personally don't like it. I find it to be one of those new albums that you listen to once and never again.

Anyone else think track 6 - Nelech, on the new Dovid Gabay has a very similar intro to Benny Friedman's Yesh Tikva?

I didn't buy the CD yet. Is it good? I'm hesitating because the last 2 songs were already released. One as a single and one on Inscribed.

Time for another Song of the Day! It’s almost Yom Kippur, so how about some Rachamana?

A personal favorite, Rachama by Kol Achai
https://soundcloud.com/ddf-sod/kol-achai-rachamana

Chabad’s Rachamana
http://www.chabad.org/multimedia/media_cdo/aid/140676/jewish/Rachamono.htm
“From a concluding prayer in the Selichot service. The opening bars reveal the remorse of the remorseful spirit, while the conclusion voices a strong hope for the acceptance and fulfillment of the worshippers’ petitions to the Almighty. The melody was introduced by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, on the holiday of Simchat Torah in 1959.”

Bonus video: Rachamana by the Rebbe http://www.chabad.org/therebbe/livingtorah/player_cdo/aid/796400/jewish/Niggun-Rachamana.htm

Rechnitz Rachamana as performed by Motti Steinmetz

I bought Gabays new cd yesterday. I think it's nice. His voice seems to have matured over the past few years and songs are each very different. Like it.

A personal favorite, Rachama by Kol Achai
https://soundcloud.com/ddf-sod/kol-achai-rachamana

Bonus review by Ari Goldwag:

Quote from: Ari Goldwag link=http://jmreviews.blogspot.com/2004/08/bkavor-kol-achai.html
Rachmana is the fourth song on the album. This song is up there - probably the best on the album. Very moving - the words are expressed very well by the composition. It asks Hashem, the one who answers poor people and the broken hearted, to answer us. It has three parts, and the third part is just a niggun. It is a soul-stirring piece, sung with a lot of heart. At the end of the song a choir sings, and I think I would have preferred to hear just Kol Achai, and no choir, but it's still really nice. This song rates an 11.

IIRC, on the ad for that cd it says specifically that it will only be available on mostly music
