I dunno that pop music should be taking anyone on a path, but if it does, I'd rather be on Ishay's road than someone who just sings 5 words from a posuk over and over for 4 minutes.
I am unfamiliar with his music but the emotions she describes it as evoking do not seem conducive to growth for most of the consumers of Jewish music. Sounds like more of a step down than up.

I'll give you one sample:

The man is a treasure.

As for the quoted piece, I didn't read the whole thing so I don't have the full context, but I don't think saying his music is "not connected to pesukim or learning or being yeshivish" is being read correctly. His music is very much grounded in Torah. I don't think the writer is implying that the music is about empty spirituality without keeping mitzvos. It's about the real heartfelt drive to connect with Hashem that transcends behavior or frumkeit based on social norms or "culture", and applies both to people who are frum and not frum yet - which is unique.

No music for me until right before Rosh Hashana.

I took it more from it expressing the feeling of someone who doesn't quite keep everything.

For the record, not being connected to pesukim is a maala not a chisaron. At least Shir Hashirim won't put on sack cloth.

What language (if any) is "Su Sulanga" in?
Do you want to play a board game, digitally or in Lakewood NJ? PM me. (Can be asynchronous, i.e. take turns whenever)

IIRC Afrikaans

Definitely not

ETA: Some words sound like Zulu to me, "hambagaya wena" for instance sounds close enough to "go away" to me. But there are numerous languages which have lots of similarities, so it could very well not be Zulu. Also, I barely know African languages, but I know enough to know that it's not Afrikaans, which sounds like Dutch.

I think the words are made up but loosely based on Zulu or one of the other South African languages.

So it sounds like I misremembered Afrikaans but was right about South Africa. :)

If somebody finds a copy of the album art IIRC it says there where it (supposedly?) comes from.

I agree with all of these. I don't they're particularly unpopular.

That's kind of the theme of that hashtag...

Especially true if you consider how novel it was at the time.
If you don't care why would you comment?
