I thought you had to buy it when you bought the flight and bought it on an amex. Not sure though

So my in laws ended up taking an earlier flight from atlanta back to ny and made it BH. however, there luggage did not make it  :(. I was wondering if anybody has any advice as to what the best way to get the most out of the airline for doing such a terrible thing?

Well sometimes your CC offers insurance for instance CO OPP offers 300 dollars (I think its 100 a day) if your baggage is delayed for more than 18 hrs.

There is an insurance option available on amex cards. once you apply for it, it automatically is linked to every amex you hold. each time you book a ticket, it charges you the fee. (there is trip delay, baggage delay and life insurance. all together $25.00 per ticket).

if you don't have an amex, there is a possibility to purchase it before your flight.

after your flight, you don't have much chance.
