I don't know if a non profit can buy but this is considered as risk free as it gets. The govt is guaranteeing it.

I read some of the 160 messages in this thread, but not all of them, so forgive me if this was already mentioned or if this is the wrong thread.

Can a non profit purchase $10k worth of I bonds? Yes

Do I understand correctly that this is in no way more risky than it sitting in a checking account? Correct

Because I'm dealing with money which isn't mine, I want to be sure I'm not abusing the trust I was given.

The added risk would be if the non-profit needs to access the money. A checking account can be liquidated at any time. I-bonds need to be held for a year before they can be liquidated.

I am locked out of my account and keep getting 2+ hour wait times on phone. Any other way to reset password or gain access?

Would it make sense to be concerned that i-bonds will be less attractive than other fixed income assets in the near term?

I'd think that you're good with loading up on i-bonds since you'll get 9.6% for Oct'22-Mar'23 and ~6% for Apr-Sep'23. The uncertainty is just for Oct'23+, but you can cash out of your i-bond positions in Jan'24 if the prevailing rates make them unattractive.

Exactly. Bonds bought today for gifts in 24 can be cashed in Jan 24.
If I understand the penalty correctly it will be the last three months of interest?

Yup. Just be sure to actually execute the gift transaction(s) in '23. Otherwise you'll have half your bonds stuck until Jan'25.

I would recommend you buy the 3 month treasury note (available through a brokerage account). You will get 4%APY.

Forgot about these and an excellent suggestion for short term. You can also buy them in your Treasury Direct account.
Just a minor correction. They would be bills as notes are longer term.
