Such a loss. He was a gadol who was respected by everyone, chassidim and non-chassidim alike. I know many yeshivaleit who consulted with him for Daas Torah. He was such a rodef min hakavod - I remember clearly that he used to walk alone down the street, with no gabbaim or chassidim. I would say good morning as he passed, and he would return the greeting, without the slightest indication that he was a big rebbe.

A rebbe of that caliber and generation is discontinued. His humility was so exceptional and natural indeed. A terrible loss.

The name Chaim was added when he was sick before his Bar Mitzva, but then they remembered that his younger brother's second name was Chaim, so they shortened it to Chai. IIRC, the story is printed in one of the Tales for the Soul books by Yair Weinstock.
