Google photos because it's (still) free.

Usually use 2 other hard drives as well.

I'll start, I started with Amazon photos because if their free unlimited photo backup and 5 GB videos, (eventually ended up buying more gb).
I also backup to Google photos since its linked go my account its easier go have everything in one place, also unlimited to june 2021 ( not sure exactly what who charge after that ) downside is in order it shouldn't count towards storage space its not stored in its original quality.

Hence the 2 hard drive suggestion. Why don't you go ahead and try the steps square suggests? He spent his time responding to you it may be worth the shot..

Crashplan

And why did you choose that one ?
Back in the day, before they stopped their "home" plans & PtP backups, they were clearly the obvious choice. Especially for someone like me with TBs of data to protect.

More recently, somebody convinced me that it's worth it to stick with Crashplan even if they're not the cheapest. (I don't remember the reasoning)

They support external drives?

Did it, and it helped. Now I'm up to the stage where it asks to Be initialized, bit I'm afraid it'll delete everything.

This drive doesn't make a faint sound when starting.

Put your ear to it before plugging it in, and listen to start sequence.
We're still waiting for a report on the sounds

I used Crashplan until they got rid of the plan I was on. Switched to Backblaze and been happy with it.

I use OneDrive for documents, as I want auto backup between edits. My photos and videos are backed up from time to time on two external drives.

One drive is not backup. It will get deleted as soon as it is deleted on the computer

IINM, there is a recycling bin on OneDrive. An issue would be if you delete part of a document and then save it, but I don't think any backup software would help that.
