So you change the mapping of My Documents, My Music etc. all to go into the GD folder?
I my experience, the key to good backup is having it done automatically.

My My Documents folder is empty. I created a new My Documents folder in my GD folder. That's where I save all my docs.

It's automatically and fast.
The initial backup took less then 12 hours. And I have 86GB of data.

Sounds good. Does it backup every type of file in the folder (for example a folder with executable programs in it)?

I'm thinking of a twist. I leave all the folders in place and backup my whole PC with Crashplan-free version, with the destination folder being GD. This way everything stays the same as before, and I get automatic GD cloud backup.

What's GD's limit? I have LOTS more than that.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

It's originally free 15GB for personal and 30GB for business.

But I have free 130GB... it just takes a little creativity  ;)

looking for another suggestion;
CrashPlan local drive backup stores it in giberish files, restore-able through their software.
I'm looking for 'unencrypted' backup, more  like automatic sync so that the files on the backup drive can be accessed 'as-is' (along the lines of GD)
is that possible with CP? is there other software that will automatically back up (incremental changes from) a designated folder, to a local drive?

also, does CP replace the need for windows backup(restore points etc.)? or is that unrelated?

Crashplan won't do that. There are programs like SyncBack that you can configure to backup your files on a schedule, but it wouldn't be instantly when you edit them. I don't know of a program like that, but possibly there is one.

re: restore points, i think not, but I'll let the experts confirm it.

1. Any recommendations for a NAS?

2. Anybody know if I can use CrashPlan with a NAS? (i.e. can my one "computer" be the NAS?

I've heard amazing things about Synology branded ones. I believe they have a plugin or app for CP that would do that and let you use the NAS as your single computer

I haven't used it in years, and wasn't thrilled with it then. I found that every so often it would stop running - it needed to be babysat.
BitTorrent sync?
That could work - syncing to another computer/server. However, if your files got corrupted by a virus or something, the corrupted files would be copied over, so you'd be left with nothing.

That's the advantage of something like crashplan, that saves multiple versions so you always have what to go back to.

I have Carbonite - is there any reason to switch to a different service? Is anything better? Carbonite, Crashplan, and Backblaze all seem to be about the same price.

Does anyone use / has anyone used https://www.rossbackup.com?

If crashplan has a good coupon that could be a reason to switch.

OTOH don't forget that if you switch, you'll have to wait for all your files to back up again, or else pay for both programs during the overlap. Depends how many files you have.

Anyone try SOS Online Backup or IDrive?  Those seem the best from what I've read; wondering if anyone has had any experience with them, or can recommend another.

Also, if you are recommending a different one, how would you respond to this:

Edit:
Whoops, forgot links.
