Minimum Liabilty Provided by Rental Companies
« on: January 30, 2011, 11:55:04 PM »
I saw this at Hertz and thought some might find it useful. Basically the law requires that you have insurance when on the road, so the rental companies are required to provide liability insurance however, the limits in some states are pretty low as you can see.

I realize this is late but the answer is yes just like your insurance would cover in another state. I don't know how it works with Canada tough.

It also depends on what's written in the contract,  if your not allowed to take the vehicle out of the US then insurance may not cover over there.

so, in the case of an accident, I have to deal with everything and I'm considered uninsured (if I don't have my own insurance and I refuse LIS)? or does Hertz have their own coverage which they don't pass on to me but they will bill me?

I personally rented in NJ and had a little accident in Toronto and was fully covered (only $800 of damages)

There is an image of a chart in a post above with all the state minimums, for Florida it is 15/30/15 and that's what Hertz provides, Avis's website seems to indicate that they also provide up to the state minimum.

Take note, however, the liability Hertz provides is only secondary to any other liability coverage you may have, the same is true in every state except California where there is no coverage and Arizona, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia where they provide primary liability.
Similarly for Avis, in California and Texas they do not provide any liability, in Missouri and Utah they only provide liability if the renter has no liability him/herself, in New York they provide primary and the other states are not specified but it seems to imply that they all have primary liability provided up to the state minimums.

Very informative, thanks.
Do you have the link for Avis's terms on this? TIA.
