Officially that's not enough to extend it, though unofficially that may indeed work.

-Stay at a spg hotel
-Dine/Drink at a spg hotel (must spend $10 or more)
-Spent on the spg amex card

Transferring points doesn't officially count as activity.

got an email that my spg gold that i got from my amex plat is expiring as i didn't have enough paid stays for the year....is this simply a matter of calling spg and having them confirm that I still have an amex plat card?

I've got the same problem, except I don't have the Plat anymore. Any other way of extending Gold?
Also, I booked nights for pre-Pesach, but I won't be Gold then. Since I booked them with Gold, will I still receive Gold benefits, or do I need to be Gold at the time of the stay?

SPG.com doesn't give an expiration date. Why do you think it extended your points?

I wouldn't rely on it, they probably just can't tell the difference between qualifying and non-qualifying activity. Feel free to write to SPG.com and see what they say.
Of course it's always possible that the official policy doesn't match the actual policy, but we would need a guinea pig with a small SPG balance to actually test that out and not have any official activity for over 18 months.

Called and sent a sm. Both comfirmed what Dan said;

AR points do not qualify.

Effective 03/01 any SPG activity, including earning or redeeming any points from any source will extend your Starpoints for another 12 months!
