Do you answer cellphone calls from unknown numbers?
« on: June 17, 2015, 11:16:43 AM »
When I started my business several years back, I made a common amateur mistake of giving out my cellphone number to clients. Slowly but surely this made my life miserable as they would call me at all hours, day or night. As my business grew, I naturally had some disputes with certain clients, and because they had my number, it reached a point where I no longer answered my phone for those clients OR for any numbers I didn't recognize.

Sometimes I miss important calls because of this, but my theory is that if someone needs to reach me they would have the common decency of leaving a message so that I know who they are. Changing my number is not an option, as I have had it for almost 12 years, and hundreds of friends, relatives and companies have my number.

I'm curious what other people's thoughts are on the matter.

What about porting the number to Google voice and slowly migrate people over to a new private number? I had to do that a couple of years back, granted I probably had less people who had my number but it wasn't that hard.

Too much of a hassle. The closest thing to that I do is to simply give out my GV number which is connected to my personal number, but I still can't know immediately if the incoming call is from GV until I pick up.

Story of my life...

I have 2 phones. Friends and family on one... and the old contacts can still reach me.... and if I'm in no mood to carry both around then I forward the number to my other phone...

Trucaller is very helpful. But I'm with you, I rarely pick up numbers I don't recognize. If it's important, they'll leave a message. I've gotten over the curiosity factor long ago.
If you don't care why would you comment?

People still record personal voicemail greetings? Haven't heard one in a long time. Usually it's just "after the tone, please record your message"...

Either way, I think that the people or companies that have any sense of decency will leave a voicemail.

If only it was that short, most repeat the number you just diealed and give you other options before you can actually leave a msg.

I have no problem with people having my cell phone number, and I answer most calls if I am able to when they ring.

I also have no problem telling people not to call me at certain times, not at all, or anything else I feel that needs to be said about how I am communicated with.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

As a consumer.
When I call my plumber, electrician, etc. if they don't answer, I don't leave a message, I send a text with my problem of the day.

I save every number that can be of interest to me in the future, so I don't have much  of that problem.
