NYC-Bound El Al Plane Turns Back After Engine Failure

An El Al plane that left Israel for New York City on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. was forced to shut one of its engines during the flight due to failing oil pressure, Walla! News reported.

The aircraft's captain decided to turn back and is expected to land at Ben Gurion International Airport at 10:30 p.m.; a replacement flight for the 342 passengers has been scheduled for later Wednesday night.

No. Not every flight.

But an ELAL flight, from TLV to JFK is big news.

What I don't get is that they took off at 11am and are landing back in TLV at 2230 which is over 12 hours later. Isnt that the same total time from TLV-JFK so why not just continue rather than turn back around?!?!

Wonder why they didn't just land in Europe - must've been the costs involved in getting repairs done in europe, putting people up, availability of replacement aircraft, etc...
