Any advice on what's good for basic running on streets/treadmill? Something good for the feet, ankle, legs, back, etc.

It's in the title. Sneakers or Running shoes would be your best bet.

If you really want something good, go to a store that specializes in these things and have them pick something for you. These places will measure your feet and all kinds of other things to figure out which type of shoe is best for you.

Thanks for a serious answer. I actually found out that that's exactly the kind of store we're going to. How much is this going to cost me? $50 a pair? 100?

Likely much closer to the $100 or more mark.

I personally am brand loyal to aisics; I have been using them for years -- durable, light and comfortable.. I run indoors and outdoors (pavement & trails)  As Marco Polo suggested; definitely visit a specialty running store and make sure the shoe fits well

I also happen to like Asics. I have done a lot of training, races and my marathon in them and have not had issues.

Once you get fitted and find out what kind of shoe is best for you, you can then search online to find cheaper ones for your next pair.

The higher lines of the Asics brand wins Runner's Magazine awards each year. They have a good GT series and the Gel Nimbus. Usually over $100, however you can feel the quality and they are in Nordstrom Rack or have $40 off sometimes.

If you are looking for better prices http://www.holabirdsports.com/ is usually cheaper by at least 20 dollars

My FIL is a podiatrist and he always says go with a solid pair of new balance (usually the hideous looking ones are the best for your feet,  ::) go figure) or if you're willing to spend then aisics is the way to go.
Stay away from Nike! LOL

So, DW and I just went to a running store in Denver.

The friendly staff first had us walk a few steps and watched how we walk and then had us run on a treadmill. Afterwards, she reviewed a slo-mo recording of our run with us pointing out how we run straight and don't need any sort of correction for our ankles tilting in or something.

Now that we knew no correction was needed, she brought out like 5 brands' classic shoe. Each brand has a drop of a different fit so you need to pick the one that doesn't hurt anywhere. But then we asked to try different types of cushioning and here is where I saw basically 3 types of shoes by each brand:
- the bulky classic running shoe
- the medium, standard sneaker that seems a lot like classic sneakers
- the very light weight, natural feel shoe

We opted for the middle ground. They're not as arched but they still have plenty of support. Simply, they had the best feel for us. We both ended up actually liking the exact same shoe (in men's/women's) - New Balance Boracay Fresh Foam. Paid just a few bucks more than Amazon, so not bad.

Not quite BP, but Jack Rabbit on 7th Ave past 1st St.  151 7th Ave
They do a good job.  They'll introduce you to high end sneakers. ie Brooks, HOKA
Usually not in all black, but they'll help you order the color you want.
