You would have access to either lounge with just your boarding pass.

So I'm flying to HNL in first. They didn't let me in because it's domestic. Is this their policy?

You were not flying in First, you were probably flying in BusinessFirst which requires a PS flight for lounge access (which HNL is not from any US airport IINM).

I read reports online about United Club EWR not allowing outside food.

Does anyone know if this is actually enforced?

I know Dan always gets NKS when in EWR.

Never had an issue, although I don't make it obvious when entering the lounge and try to sit away from people.

You just can't go without a boarding pass. Nixes the option of getting a gate pass, as well.
