Who initiated the FR?
Any idea what may have sparked it?

+1

At least they're being transparent with you, the US F/R reps aren't usually that forthcoming (to say the least)

Do you know a way to avoid paying the annual fee upfront?

How did you set that up?
Did they just ask when you were applying for 2nd card if you have an existing SPG account?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

I applied for both online and both were first year free so no fee upfront.  I first signed up for an SPG account and then used the SPG number when applying for the American SPG Amex card.  Then I applied for a Canadian SPG Amex card and used the same SPG account number.  Was simple and no problem.

I haven't been able to find a Canadian SPG with first year free.
If anyone stumbles across one, please post.

FYI-
Someone with a U.S. Amex SPG can refer one to a Canadian Amex SPG.

I haven't been able to find a Canadian SPG with first year free.
If anyone stumbles across one, please post.

I decided to go for it and that the 25,000 SPG are worth the $120 annual fee. The deals just aren't the same in Canada.
I have the U.S. Amex SPG and just got approved for the Canadian as well. I'm going to wait until the points post to merge accounts.

Thanks Dealvr. Maybe I'll also do it. Any ideas how to get Canadian dollars into my Canadian checking from US so I can pay $120 fee? My Canadian account is with TD.

One of the TD account types on this page might be helpful as a long term solution.

TD canada has nothing to do with TD u.s.

They definitely allow fee-free withdraws at TD USA, so I figured there might be a deposit (or USD payment) option as well.
