Seemed like Amazon was trying to goad them into that but I doubt they will being that they are specifically looking to compete with their online rival.

Walmart's home page indicates they are starting a bit early

I don't think they want to compete with anyone, and weren't trying to goad WalMart into doing anything. The response from Amazon was just a way to spin WalMart's promotion into another proof that Amazon (and shopping online) is superior.

I agree in regards to goading but it's kinda obvious that Amazon is trying to sign up as many customers for Prime before the competition (Walmart, Jet, and others) can lay their hands on them.

Obviously nobody enjoys competing, but when a company is eating up your market share, all you wanna do is compete.

Contrary to popular belief, Walmart actually also sells high quality, brand name items.

However at this point they are playing from behind and would love to compete if possible head to head on this sale. Obviously they would love to take more market share in the ecommerce world however they haven't been hugely successful to date.
