Not to be a downer but you could mint URPs on an Ink card and fly F both ways and it would only cost you about a hundred dollars more than OP's price for economy.

I researched this flight quite abit in the last 15 odd minutes...
basically it only work Melbourne to LAX that way not other way round and it's cheaest tickets are on Monday, Wednessday and friday but the other days of the week still are around 501 all the tickets I've seen are between Mid october and mid november but there has been a lot more tickets than i expected
if you're searching for these tickets use Orbitz.com for whatever reason ITA software doesn't bring them up, Orbitz gives till next day 10PM Central to cancel

it seems like its a price mistake because i tried pulling it up on matrix and it gives me $1300 and the same on the qantas site

Ya it is suggested for Friday etc but first like yu said u can play with it but also it's direct to LAX so actually uarrive Friday early afternoon little risky but can work if needed to
