I broke the screen on my Macbook Pro
« on: June 30, 2015, 06:55:42 PM »
Just by picking it up awkwardly, the pressure from my thumb cracked the glass in the top center.

It's a late 2013 13" MBP Retina version.

Apple charges $800, but my local comp repair store quoted me $400.

I bought it with my Citi Advantage card almost 2 years ago.

Should I contact the card to see if the insurance will cover it?

What do you have to lose?

If the CC doesn't cover it it's possible to DIY.

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Retina+Display+Late+2013+Display+Assembly+Replacement/27666

Part from them is $349, on ebay it'd be less.  Depends if it's worth the time/money.  I've never done a display but I do my own phone batteries, Macbook wireless cards, optical drives, etc.

After getting the tools and the screen it's about $375. Would rather pay a bit more and have it professionally done.

What specifics do you think the Citi card will ask about?

I have the tools you'd need buy yeah $100-50 difference might be worth seeing a pro.

https://www.cardbenefits.citi.com/products/extended-warranty.aspx

Looks like it might add a year to manufacturers warranty.

Realized I actually made the purchase on my Chase United Mileage Plus Card.

On the phone with them now.

Why anyone would use a Mac is beyond me.

They perform at least well.  They look great and they are associated with some cache or status.  That's not too hard to understand.

So called "performance" or "luxury" vehicles are the same.  Many people erroneously associate performance with status (and thus cost).  It's not for me... but I get it.
