does anyone have experience renting cars in the u.s. with one of these?

I have many friends who have rented using DLs from canada and UK. w/o an issue.

Officially I think it has to be in English or have a legal English translation attached. Unofficially I don't think they're so strict about it. Obviously this all varies by state.

As in not getting points for speeding/running reds etc?

no. as in my us license will expire soon so i converted it to an israeli one to be able to drive for the month + i will be in nyc and yyz before heading to cali to renew. (and yes, i have to be there in person to renew)

10 years ago, when I got my first Israeli License, I had to go to Memsi (like the AAA here) and get an international License. Since Israel starting putting the info. in english on the license there is no need to do that, but it doesn't hurt. BTW, having an Israeli license saved me at least 5 tickets and from having a crash put on my american driving record. Good Luck.

thing is that they now dont issue plastic cards to tourists students. only a piece of paper. i was wondering if avis would rent to me with that paper together with the intl. the guy at memsi was skeptical

do they ask to see the original one as well or only the international?
according to avis.com it seems i need to provide both

Officially. I had a NY trooper ticket me for "unlicensed operator" (in addition to a speeding ticket), because he "didn't understand" my license. It was the "new" Israeli ones that were officially issued because of such problems, and had all my details in English.
