NY - MIAMI Road Trip Planning
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:56:02 AM »
I have searched the thread, but it appears this topic was never discussed. Has anyone ever done this drive before? Is it interesting, boring, fun (i know it is like 20 hours)? What are some interesting spot and cities on the I-95 that are to see, and not to miss, while driving there, where should i spend the night at a good 2/3 of the way to florida?

Anyone who has done this, please share your ideas and tips, thanks!

i did it plenty of times.

some cool places to stop, though not directly of the 95

Atlanta GA, Savanah, GA, Gatlinburg Tennessee. Plenty more, just not sure you want your road trip to take a week.

Unless you're going to take it easy, spend time, and actually see the sites, it sounds like a form of torture to me.

That's why g-d created airplane and mileage programs if you can't afford 'em.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Based on this Winter's unpredictable weather, even down south, it may be even more tortuous.

thurs morning is not really enough time to see anything or stop.
drive time with reasonable stops (15min break every 4 hours or so) is 18+ hours nyc-miami. i drove twice, left around 7pm from nyc and take it down until the virginia/carolina border (about 7+ hours depending where you stop) and then continue the rest of the drive the next day, leaving around 9/10am and hitting miami around 9/10pm. To leave thurs morn, if you drive straight your best case scenario is arriving early friday morning. So unless you dont need to sleep, you arent leaving yourself any time to stop anywhere if you leave thurs morning

That is exactly what i want, like which places should we spot or see in those 15-30 minutes breaks, not like big attractions, and also where should we spend the night? Somewhere close south (like 11+ hours from NYC).

I would be driving it just one way, and taking flight back to NYC.

I drove it a bunch of times but I never stopped, always drove straight.
Unless you're looking for a 5* hotel that you can pay with points your best bet is probably to drive until you feel like stopping for the night.

I have searched the thread, but it appears this topic was never discussed.
There's this thread: http://www.dansdeals.com/forums/index.php?topic=374.msg3959#msg3959 (If I didn't remember the thread and what was discussed there I probably would'nt have found it either)

if you drive strait with out stops, it is less than 19 hours. I recommended you wake up @ 4 am and leave, getting you in @ 10-11 pm with out stops.

I disagree, I enjoy driving.
I guess it depends how you look at it. If the driving is seen strictly as a means of getting from point a to point b and the "trip" only starts once you get to point b, then you're right. but not if you look at the drive as a part of the "trip" and an adventure in it's own right.

As the saying goes "Adventure is discomfort in retrospect" (or something like that)

Or like I said.  If you're driving to see the sites along the way (and I don't mean the rest stop to fill up on gas) that's one thing.

If you're just driving to get there in 19 hours flat, then I would consider that torture.
YMMV I suppose.

Yup, YMMV.
What you might consider torture I might consider fun.

although 19 hours is kind of a tough one. It's long enough to be annoying but not really long enough to be a real adventure..

Ya, for some reason a drive from NYC-LAX sounds more appealing to me than NYC-MIA.
Not sure why really, perhaps it's the adventure aspect?

I would want to do like 7am thursday, driving for like 13 hours, with 2 hours for sights, and then stop at motel like 10. And then friday at like 7am to drive another 6-7 hours to maimi, getting there like 2 hours b4 shabbos.
