What should I say? Should I ask them to replace it?

Yes. You have nothing to lose, and a new camera (or a credit) to gain.

and if that doesn't work, most cannon cameras come with a 1 year guarantee. call them up, explain your issue and ask for a courtesy repair. send it it in with a letter explaining that rep xyz told you on 9/9/99 that you can have a courtesy repair and they will fix it for free.

Will that work with a four year old Sony? I have the same problem.

I don't have any experience with Sony, only Canon but I don't think a 4 year old camera is worth repairing...

My canon sd1300, which i bought on amazon a little over a year ago, is having the same problem. Since it's been more than a year, I've lost the warranty, but it was in great shape until this. Any other ideas on how to home-fix this problem?

The lens is replaceable... It could be a gear in the lens broke but that'll be harder to fix...

Here for $35 you could buy a new lens.

There prob is youtube videos on how to replace it.

I have done it in the past, Not too hard

You could fix the lens... but you will have to take it apart .. I am not sure how simple it will be.
