Wednesday-Day 4Our final day of the drive was going to be mostly driving-from Florence, SC all the way until EWR! Originally we were going to go I-95 straight (through Washington, Baltimore, etc.) and with leaving early enough we would hopefully miss most of the terrible afternoon DC traffic. However, we ended getting a bit of a late start (maybe it was the new hotel thing) so we instead figured that instead of going that route and sitting in traffic we may as well take the longer scenic route back which usually has not too much traffic. (We were not planning on any attractions in DC area anyhow as we live not too far away and that can be done anytime). The route we planned was up the coast through North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and FINALLY New Jersey. One of the really cool things along this drive (aside from it being really beautiful as opposed to boring I95) is the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel. It connects the Delmarva Peninsula with Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. They have a nice visitors center with a great lookout point at the beginning (or end if you are coming from the other side) and the whole idea of driving along a four lane road that keeps switching from a bridge to a tunnel for what seems like an eternity was pretty cool.
A couple more of those…

And Finally!!!!!

This day of driving took 13 hours and I must admit that at about 9 hours when I looked at the gps and it said there is 4 hours remaining (and it was already 9 pm) I turned to my wife and said-why in the world did we do this-BUT four hours later-returning the van at EWR, I was more than happy we did!!
If you plan on doing a drive like this and want more info please post questions here as I have lots more info of things that we did not do, etc. which others may be able to gain from! Hope you enjoyed!!
