Converting old video tapes digital video
« on: July 12, 2015, 12:39:00 PM »
I have about 10 old big video tapes I want to convert and store on my computer.

Anyone know of the easiest and cheapest way to do this?

Yes that seems to be lowest, plus the converter total would be in the $60 or $70 range

you think it would be cheaper to pay a pro to do it? what would they charge per tape? i have about 8

I used a cheap guy once. He charged about $10, did a terrible job. If you have the know-how, probably best to do it yourself, unless you find someone reputable and cheap.

There is a LivingSocial offer for this for $39.99. When you click that link, it may offer it discounted to $35 for 10 minutes from the time you click it.

Costco did ours.
There is a $5 off coupon for this in the current coupon book.

I did it online for cheap Southtree.com. Very shady always half price type of thing and they did a very poor job. Bad and inconsistent quality. They offered to redo it and did it worse the 2nd time around. Ended up getting half the money back from them and just quitting there. They claim they are used by Disney but....... :o (they seem to be associated with the famous Legacy Box, so I am avoiding them too). I want to try Costco since I've heard good things about them, or a local company. It will cost more but probably worth it.

Just a heads up: make sure to have a second (or maybe even third) backup of your videos... A hard-drive doesn't last forever, and especially the portable ones... They die pretty randomly.
Speaking from painful experience, having all our family videos from +20 years lost forever

Should be backed up online.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Best cheap/free online backup method?
