Delta Skymiles Dynamic Award Pricing
« on: July 14, 2015, 01:45:15 PM »
Everyone knew this was coming; saw this today: http://mjontravel.boardingarea.com/2015/07/14/breaking-skymiles-dynamic-award-pricing-and-other-big-news/

And from the source: http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/skymiles/news-and-updates.html

"GENERAL PROGRAM UPDATES
Award Price Changes
We know your miles are important, so we want to provide the most notice possible regarding Award price changes. For travel on or after June 1, 2016, the number of miles needed will change based on destination, demand and other considerations. But most Award prices will remain unchanged. To see the best availability and deals, search at least 21 days prior to departure and use our Award Calendar by selecting “flexible days” when searching for a flight."

As of today, Delta's schedule only goes up to June 9, 2016. Only searched a handful of destinations after June 1, 2016, and their coach and business are pricing at the unpublished saver-levels. I'm sure as the schedule get's a bit farther out it'll change..

Can't beat Zimbabwean Dollars in July of 2008:

0.0000000001

I actually have a collection of ZWD from this period, and you can see how they kept printing bigger denominations until they got to this:

I don't think it's evil as much as it's stupid, though I'm sure some corrupt officials had a nice take from all the chaos, and it wasn't in ZWD.

Award redemption are starting to look like what P&G and Coca-Cola do:

Coke has 7.5oz cans, 12oz cans, 500ml bottles, 20oz bottles, 1-liter bottles, 1.25-liter bottles, 1.5-liter bottles, 2-liter bottles and 8/12/24 (other count) packs. Then they arrange for promotions for multiples of the above (e.g. 3x 2-liter bottles, or 4x 12-packs of 12oz cans).

Bounty has standard-size, big-, double-, huge-, mega-, giant- (other-?) rolls, in single roll, 2-, 3-, 4- 12- and 24-roll packs. Each of those roll/pack combinations have basic and select-a-size varieties.

Classic select-a-size... my wife will not let me get NON-select-a-sizes regardless of sales.

Select a size has more sheets per roll, but less paper-towel overall, they're charging a premium for convenience (and more perforations ;)).

To me, it also seems like Delta is announcing what they are already doing (in part).  If you look for premium award seats on, say, LAX - JFK, you will never find it at the cheaper level.  It's always higher (by leaps and bounds).  This, I speculate, is part of the reason they hid their award chart.  They have decided not all aircraft and not all routes are equal.  Now they will have a policy to hide behind.

I guess the $$ from the banks is more valuable than the loyalty that these programs are supposed to create. I can't see why a frequent traveler would want to put up with this.

They've never cared before about standing behind anything, so why now?

Also seems like they regret the fact they don't have close-in fees.  Instead of owning up they will just limit reasonable close-in redemptions altogether.
Great way to earn customer loyalty.
