I can try, I don't know what you like about hotmail as I switched over probably 10 years ago, so I can just list a few things I like about gmail.

Biggest advantage for me is gchat which is the main communication I have for many friends.

Best spam filter fwiu.

Great app on my android (You need to get an android too :P )

I am not sure what else to compare. Suppose I'd have to try out hotmail to find out.

You can always forward your old emails and set up the new ones to be forwarded automatically. Gmail also has a great search engine.

Biggest advantages of Gmail over hotmail:
-Search engine is 100x better.
-Spam filter is better
-GChat
-Faster sending and receiving of emails.
-Better Android push/pull integration
-Google Now integration pulling flight status, tracking numbers, etc.

Hotmail though is much improved from the old days to the point that the format itself is now better than Gmail.  The search engine though is just pathetic.

You can import your whole hotmail inbox to gmail easily (not to mention set up forwarding so you only ever have to check one account).
