I was once with a tov when someone asked him about finding out before. He said that it makes problems with the Bracha hatov vihameitiv if you know before. He said from Butchacher that no Bracha for girl since you always knew it would be "at least" a girl.

So he was bringing the Buchacher to say that you actually shouldn't make shehecheyanu on a girl, or just to explain why you don't say hatov v'hameitiv? If it's the former, we don't pasken that way (at least I've never heard of anyone being told not to make the shehecheyanu), and if it's the latter, there are many explanations given for the difference in bracha between boy/girl - even ifyou say one doesn't apply that hardly means you don't say the bracha.

Also, I don't know the halachos of hatov v'hameitiv all that well, but for example by wine, you make the bracha when you drink the better wine, even if you knew you had it all along. I can't imagine why knowing you're having a boy would be a reason not to say hatov v'hameitiv.

I can imagine there might be a difference, in whine the Brachah is on the taste, not the possession of the wine, while by having a boy the Brachah is for the good news.

Again I didn't go through this properly, just speculating. It's pretty clear that you can not make the Brachah at 20 weeks but knowing then what the gender is will take away from the excitement at the birth, maybe even enough to not allow you to make a Brachah?

What does excitement have to do with it, you make the bracha on a boy even if you wanted a girl? The fact is that the poskim have defined for us that a boy is considered a 'shmuah tovah' for 2 parties (the husband and wife) and therefore qualifies for hatov v'hameitiv.

I was using the 20 weeks to illustrate the point, that it's not the knowing that you will have a boy that's mechayev you, it's the finding out that you had a boy.

Yeah, there better be more to it than that. Or at least a lot of testing to make sure people won't naturally fall off.
