On the NY birth certificate form it asks for the gender of the birthing parent...
A friend of mine told me that he had to spend an entire Friday afternoon (in the short, wintery Fridays) in the NYC welfare office because by accident, when his case worker set up his profile they wrote that he was pregnant instead of writing it by his wife. His whole case was therefore messed up and he was threatened to lose the services. He said he spent hours just arguing with them explaining that he is a man and can, therefore, not be pregnant. All they told him was, "we understand and agree, but the system says otherwise, so we cannot change it..."
I don't know the end of the story, but this speaks enough for itself. Just a glimpse at where we are...
