Wondering what the actual basis for that "double" thing. Is it mostly chassidish?
AFAIK the halachic requirement is מכובד

A fedora and a suit jacket is dressy.
A baseball cap and a suit jacket is tacky. Not that people don't/can't do it, but it'll never go mainstream.

A fedora and suit jacket wasn't dressy when the rules were written. They were actually informal.  Back then the formalwear was tails and top hats.

In 1950? I don't think that's the case.

That's the general question on all the European dress code that guys wear today. Whether it's white shirts/black pants, hats, coats, boots, etc., you can be guaranteed that gedolim of hundreds of years ago never wore such things. The point is to dress respectfully and have "dress cloths" as defined by the time. Even in 2015 there are dress clothes, including suits and tuxs, but sticking with fur hats, especially in hot climates/in the summer seems silly to me.

Even in Europe in the 40s/50s when the fedora came in style, people only wore fur ones in the winter, and many wore straw ones in the summer if they could afford it. No where that I'm aware of does it say frum men need to be sweltering in the summer wearing European winter clothes.

Summertime ballgame, 1950s:

Do you have the weather for that game? Say it was in a cold climate and the high was 65F?

Fur hats were in fashion because it was so darn cold.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe switched the chabad hat to a fedora, which in the 40s/50 was mainstream and inexpensive.  Had he come to the US today perhaps Chabad would be wearing baseball caps?
Nah, of anything I'd guess a kangol hat

Why would people voluntarily dress in clothes that would make them hot? I mean drawings of how people (like the Rambam) dressed in the 1100s/1200s depicts people in warm climates (like Spain and Egypt) in robes/tunics to stay cool. I'm saying that while people did wear hats year round because it was formal, they didn't wear fur/felt hats in the summer. Also most men wore linen, light colored suits in the summer since they're cooler.

lol. Chemical suits are even worse than natural fibers like wool and cotton. Now if G&G starts making coats out of the wicking material sports shirts are made out of that's a different story.

The coats? I imagine only when it's cold.
Back then they always wore hats outdoors.

It's a fedora, or maybe a tophat. You're merging the neck of the guy behind him with his hat, that's why it kinda looks like a streimel.
