smartly worded but I disagree. The ultimate purpose is in case things were overlooked or taken after checkout . I’m pretty sure every Costco has a cashier do the work , sometimes even re loading the cart depending on location , and there’s still a guy checking the receipts at the door

Costco is different because it's a membership club.

Appreciate the sentiment, but not how things work. Walmart is keeping costs down by employing a business model which cuts x number of cashiers for 1 door checker. It has nothing to do with trusting you. Don't like bringing your own bag? Don't shop at Aldi. Don't like having your receipt checked at the door? Pay more and shop somewhere else.

+1, unlike Walmart door checkers who aren't doing a thing. If I were to steal I'd do it at Walmart. And Costco's self checkout receipts prints on blue paper, likely for the door checker to focus more.

Having to face and pass a human before you leave makes it much tougher psychologically to steal. Similarly, meeting a human at the beginning of your shopping experience makes you associate your theft with a human instead of a corporation which is psychologically much easier to justify stealing from.

I believe they check the date and time of the receipt.

When you have a full cart of items there is no way they could count the items in 2 seconds.
and next time you go check where they marked your receipt with the highlighter/marker

They probably look at what you have vs what is on the receipt and guesstimate.

I once had the checker at Costco realize that I had left an item at the register. He called back to the register and they brought me the missing item.
