Free SPG Gold for a Year

Just saw this.  People have said they have been given a year of SPG gold status by calling up 1-888-625-4990 and mentioning code UI.

Additionally, people have been doing it online by going to www.starwoodhotels.com, clicking on Customer Support-->Online Chat and making the same request.

For all those who have the SPG amex credit card, call 1-888-625-4990 and tell rep that you received code UI for a upgrade to gold status. I just did and now have gold status, the whole phone call took 2 minutes.

Gold status entitles you free upgrades when available and late check out at 4PM.
I think you also receive 50% more points per stay.

Yes, that is the code for AMEX Plat cardholders to be upgraded to SPG Gold.
They may ask for your cardnumber.

I don't think you need to have the SPG amex to get it though.  I already have it so didnt bother, but seems trying over chat is the best way

Who ever mentioned needing SPG AMEX to get upgraded to SPG Gold.
SPG AMEX only gets you preferred plus status, which gets you "upgrades" and 4pm checkout unless you spend $30K on it in a year.

Gotcha, didn't even read his post.
You do officially need an AMEX Plat to use the code, but they rarely will make you prove it.

seems like they are being much more strict now, maybe they just go a memo that they can't continue do it...
i did it for my mom 15 mins ago without a problem, now im trying to do it for my bro. and they just don't let...

Apparently, no more over the phone upgrades to Gold status. They require you fax in proof.

Seems like SPG is really cracking down...

I called SPG today and told them that I WANT to go to a starwood hotel on my next vacation, but my wife loves a certain hyatt. If you upgrade me to gold status, perhaps I can convince her to try out your hotels.

They gave it to me - but only until the end of the calendar year. The rep said it's the best he can do, seeing that I have no stays at all on my account.
