Question about flying US/AA TLV-NYC

The flight from PHL-LGA is operated by a small DH8 propellor plane and I will be traveling with a large suitcase and a normal sized carry on suitcase. However, I doubt the carry on will fit in this aircraft's overheard bins. So will they gate check it for me or make me pay for two bags? Anyone have experience with this?

In my experience flying short aa flights like this they gate check and don't charge.

IME they gate checked it for free and returned it to me as I got off the plane (not by the carousel).
if its one ticket from lga to phl (2 legs) you don't pay for luggage
