Thanks guys! I've never rented a car in Israel before.. How much cheaper would an agent have been?  I suppose in total I paid about $240 for 6 days

Prob roughly $25-30 a day total, half that for Shabbos.

Amex started covering rentals in Israel in September

See this post

http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=4830.msg1875098#msg1875098

I submitted a claim for car rental damage in Israel with Amex. The car rental companies here charge 17% VAT for damages, and now Amex claim they only cover the damage but not the taxes. I never had such an issue with chase. Did anyone have a similar situation? Is there anything I can do about it?

I checked my T&C and they exclude taxes on repairs , unless required by law to cover them. I assume in the US they do cover taxes, but seems in Israel they won't? If correct, why use Amex to rent?

Anybody have any experience with this in Israel? I have a 37 day rental & I’m trying to decide if it’s worth the hassle of splitting my rental so that I can use chase or just using Amex.

So happy I read this thread, just booked a car through priceline/budget and they gave me a rate of 84 dollars for 8 days( but no mention of any fees), and then when I asked one of the agents I got it for 168 with all fees, which i felt was a little off. So just to get things clear, what other fees would budget charge me when I get to the desk? And also would chase sapphire reserve be good to cover collision insurance?
TIA

There is 3rd party/TP insurance which by law in israel they have to charge you. Donno how much it is per day. Agents are usually have v good prices. Chase reserve is good but i would suggest bringing a letter from chase stating that they will covee you in israel. Sometimes at the desk they will request this and they wont budge if you don't have it. They will make you pay cdw..

It seemed to be cheaper with priceline, the agent wanted 168 as opposed to 84. Didnt think about all the fees.

well you're definitely getting charged ~15 a day for TP insurance.
I'd go with an agent if you still can.

there are a few here on the forums, I can't recommend one over the other.
I think at this point I've gone through all of them here
And had a great experience every time.

So better to rent with an agent than with hertz directly in Jerusalem? I have the chase sapphire card - and unsure about cost of liability if I book with hertz direct

how can you get a letter showing their covered by amex for cdw? and is there any way to take care of liability by bringing your own insurance documents from geico showing that you are covered? also, will there be issues if I lost my license and have a temporary one in the meantime ?the actual id card has not come in the mail yet. thank you

Yes, that can be an issue as most car rental companies insist on seeing a license that was valid for 1-2 years already.

Ask your agent and he can forward your documents (if you have a picture of your old license or can download) and get permission from corporate.

Do capital one CCs offer CDW insurance on rental cars in Israel?
