HELP! on standy at JFK
« on: July 22, 2015, 03:55:46 PM »
Hey guys, I missed my flight JFK with AA, on standby for the next flight. Is there anything I can say/do to become a priority before others to so I have better chance of getting on the standby flight? Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure the next flight is full? Sometime they just like to rebook as SBY even though there are seats available, then you need to find a lounge attendant etc and ask them to confirm it

When i missed the flight the put me on standby for the next flight 5pm. They rep at the gate told me there are 4 seats left on the next flight but she couldn't do anything for me. I went to the new gate and the rep said sorry its full and you'll just have to wait for someone not to show up.

Do you have lounge access? If yes, try asking there.

Didn't have internet access but I made it on the flight. The rep at the gate was not helpful at all, he kept saying that the flight was full. I just waited and my name was eventually called. When I looked online it said that there were 3 available seats left for my flight, which I told the rep at the gate but again they weren't paying me no mind.

3 seats for sale doesn't mean there are actually any available seats on the flight.

How to make someone miss their plane so you can get the spot you want? Well...

There is such a thing as a "do-it-yourself bump."  You have to be willing to spend miles though. What you do is you go over to some guy sitting at your gate and you act like that Heineken commercial where they ask people to be spontaneous and go to some exotic destination. Then you ask him to pick a number one through ten. Then you say, "You win! You're going to Mexico City!" And right there you book him a saver award in economy for 17.5k. Easy peasy.

My cousin's husband's best friend in yeshiva used to do this constantly and get standby to anywhere.

This sounds like a stretch, I think.

This would only work if you cousin's neighbor's friend's nephew is the only one on standby.

How would this work to anywhere?

If I have a paid ticket to Europe, for which I shelled out $800, I'm not about to accept your exotic offer of Cancun which I could have bought for $300 or less. I guess maybe I'm not the random guy sitting at that gate.

Either way, what happens to the guy's luggage? Then once he gets to MEX how does he get back? Pay his own way?

Your cousin's husband *is* your cousin. So this is definitely not true. And it's Budweiser, not Heineken.
