It is against the rules. Officially, they reserve the right to charge you the price for the city pair you flew. But from all those that I know/have heard that have done it, none have been charged nor have had their FF accounts closed.

Yes. But as usual YMMV.

how about booking the return in an unrestricted fare code and cancelling it after taking the outbound?

Don't have experience with that.
But I'd expect more issues trying to get money back as opposed to just ditching a flight.

Is that even doable? Each fare on a diff fare?

It does happen that you'll get a low fare class one way and only the highest fare class on the return. Question is, wheather after taking the outbound you'll be to cancel based on the fare class of the return?
I'd think not.

Maybe I am not completely understanding this, but I just asked on my trip planning thread the other day about booking an extension from my gateway (LAX) to Hawaii since I will be returning from Europe. If I don't show up for the LAX-Hawaii portion will they punish me for it? (It is an award booking)

No, you'll be fine.

The issue is where you book an extra segment to make the flight cheaper.
