Flying before a Bris
« on: July 29, 2015, 11:28:47 AM »
I tried searching but didn't come up with anything.

Does anyone have experience flying with a baby before the bris? I want to make the bris in NY and i read that some airlines require the baby the baby to be 2 weeks old before they can fly. Anyone know which airlines don't have this problem?

TIA

YMMV-

United-United does not accept infants in incubators or infants younger than seven days old.

USAir and AA-We will accept an infant as young as 2 days old.

Southwest- A medical release for travel is required for any infant under 14 days old.

Delta-Less than 7 days requires Letter of approval from physician

You should really think about the risk of exposure to germs and the discomfort the baby might suffer. Do what's best for the baby, not what's most convenient for you.

Thanks for your concern, however, I am a Paramedic and am aware of the risks. Also, according to our pediatrician during the summer there is nothing to worry about. Winter time you have flu and colds and more germs floating around. They said it's completely safe for the baby.
My only concern is the comfort of my wife, traveling so soon after having a baby. But she is a trooper and so far is up to the idea.

I will add to the list that JetBlue will allow an infant 3-14 days old to fly with a doctors letter. She also recommended a letter proving DOB and parenthood.

If you're worried about the Mom, fly the Mohel instead of Mom + Baby.

For the record, I'm speaking from personal experience.

Why would you assume the mohel is the issue?

Good point, from my perspective if you don't have to fly the Mohel then it's even less of a question.

Having reread the OP I might be giving the OP unsolicited advice if they already made the decision to travel. However, based on his later post I'm not sure they can know before the birth how much they'll be up for it afterwards.

I was in a similar situation to the OP, who isn't a new mom either.

I respect that, but I was in the same situation and I made a different decision. It ended up working out for us because our family was attending a scheduled event elsewhere and couldn't have made it anyway.

Hope everything goes smooth and if you decide to travel it's as hassle free as possible.

You should definitely explore premium cabin options, will give you more privacy and possibly expedited security, lounge, etc.

It ended up working out for us because our family was attending a scheduled event elsewhere and couldn't have made it anyway. We ended up flying (8-hour flight) at 3 weeks in a good Economy Premium hard product, and my wife said she was much more ready than she had been a few weeks prior.

Hope everything goes smooth and if you decide to travel it's as hassle free as possible.

When a family member of mine had a boy out of town, the bris was supposed to be second days of Pesach, so no Mohel wanted to fly in there. They flew to New York on Delta with a 4-5 day old baby.

Btw Mazel Tov!
