The way my imagination sees this is a western style shootout between people who are untrained killing many children stuck in the middle

Did we all forget what happened in Buffalo with the good man with a gun? The supermarket guard tried shooting with his pistol at the 18 yr boy, bullet was repelled by the heavy body armor the shooter wore, and of course the guard was shot instantly to death by the murder's overpowering AR-15.

These monsters gear up as full fledge commandos and people naively believe that a teacher with a handgun in her pocketbook would make all the difference.

Someone walking in with a gun in their hands is no match. Concealed weapons, which the shooter usually does not account for, can be much more effective.

Three guys walk into a convenience store, one draws a gun and points it at the proprietor. A customer at the counter sneaks a gun out of his pants and shoots the unprepared gunman. Threat neutralized, only because the weapon was concealed.

afaik, these are the exact cases police actively discourage the use of weapons. Money is not worth your life and a majority of such cases the defender gets hurt.

I don't know statistics, but I know of cases where an armed robbery quickly turned into a murder.
