I checked the forums and I couldn't find one that's designated to Ecommerce Platforms.

Really depends on what your needs are. I believe the first major difference is that Shopify is a hosted solution (you don't actually own the website) while Magento isn't (it's fully open source). Additionally, I believe that with Shopify you have to use their CC processing while with Magento you can do whatever you want.

I'm planning to start an ecommerce website for a specialty item and I'm going back and forth between Magento and Shopify.

Magento Community is better designed for Ecommerce, more customizable, you can have multiple stores,

Shopify on the other hand is much simpler, cheaper, and easier but I'm hearing that the SEO isn't that great.

My particular problem with Shopify is, that the line that I will be selling is a customizable item and will need to have a short description on the right side of the product and tabs on the bottom with a long description tab, warranty tab etc.

Of what I know after doing research, it can't be changed.

Is the Mageto code really such an issue that it can cost $1000s to really get it straight even if you buy a readymade theme?
The way I see it if you buy FE the Ultimo theme it shouldn't cost over $1000 including standard extensions

I'm not sure why you'd have to pay that much money, you didn't find anything for cheaper/free? (FYI I'm a Web Developer, so I know about Magento but don't know how people use it on a day to day basis)

Fair enough, that's why I wrote that I believe :)
Just curious, which part do you do for a living, shopify or CC processing?

Cc processing
Just as an interesting fact I saw yesterday on Wikipedia that with  Magento ,USA Epay doesn't work without a $200 extension. That basically means that fidelity processing needs the extension as well.

Are you with Fidelity Processing? Is that correct?

With me you wouldn't need to purchase the extension. We own our own.

No. Exactly what was referred to upthread as a $200 extension can be gotten for free
