I wonder if there anything more to this...
I was told that it was very profitable by someone at US who knows. They claimed that they had deals with certain Israeli corporations that made them a nice profit even with the top of the plane nearly empty.

I didn't say they didn't fly with full, just that their freight was always full and a good money maker. I guess it wasn't good enough...

Same goes for the former DL ATL-TLV flight. I've spoken to people in DL's Network Planning and Profitability Dept (Yes it's called that- division of corp finance), who both mentioned ATL-TLV was quite profitable but due to fuel and other competition type reason (I.e. there is no other direct flight ATL-TLV while NY metro has many), DL shifted the ATL route to JFK and to connecting through their JV partners in CDG and AMS.

The 2nd link said AA didn't make any promises about JFK or MIA:

If it's the TWA thing they won't be able to operate any xxx-TLV....

What is the value of a route that is very profitable? How does that compare to a one-time expense of $15mm?

For an airline with billions in profit, $15mm sounds like chump-change. Or is this about precedent?

Who said anything about there being 2 seats? Are there any with 1 for the solo traveler?
