I it based on a gemara . Shiva menudim lashamayim ... one of them is someone who is at a bris and doesnt participate in the seuda. ( It also mentions that the ppl of Yerushalaim would not partake in a seuda if there was a person there of which was not of a certain caliber ( cant really remember the exact loshon) ) So to overcome this it became the minhag not to invite ppl as if the invatation would be considered as if he is there and thus passing  up the seuda. As you can see it lacks in logic and halachic bases never-the-less it is a minhag Yisroel

Rabbi (dr.) ari zivitofsky - who is famous for suing the United states that it should say israel on his son's passport writes a halachik myth busting column for Jewish action.

He writes here that there is no "true" מקור" that Eliyahu really comes to the seder

מהרם בנט's Daughter asked her father who was the old man who came in and drank from the Kos Shel Eliyahu and he answered her that she shouldn't have said what she saw and that night she was nifter (Rav Chaim said that year)

nifter=deceased?
In this case passed away, we also refer to the deceased as the nifter...

Upset, upsetting.

It can also sometimes mean regret.

In YIVO Yiddish, I have heard "Es fardrist mir' as I way of saying "I am sorry" or "Excuse me" sort of like Modern Hebrew "tzar li."
